Cat Stairs & Ramps – Helping Your Cat Get Around

Which cats can benefit most from having stairs?

There are two main reasons we will consider stairs or ramps for our cats: for accessbility, or for fun and encrichment.

What’s Better For Cats: Ramps or Stairs?

What if your cat has difficulty climbing stairs? Look for stairs that have the smallest possible gap between each step.

Indoor Stairs for Cats

Indoor cat stairs are usually made from the same sort of materials as you’ll find scratching towers and the like made from – plywood or other soft wood structure, covered with fleece or carpet like material for softness and comfort.

So like other cat furniture, quality will vary with stairs according to the type of material used, and how your cat uses the stairs (they’ll certainly last longer if they aren’t used as a scratch area, for example).

Besides quality, the two aspects to consider when choosing a set of stairs for your cat is the overall height of the structure (if you need to place it against a couch or bed to assist your cat to get up there), as well as the depth or gap between each step, particularly for those cats with bad knees, hips or general movement issues and disabilities.

There are two versions to pick from, and your choice will come down to your cat’s climbing and general movement ability and health.

Armarkat Cat Stairs - 3 steps

A healthy, young mobile cat who just wants some steps to jump around and play on will find the three-step version totally usable. Kittens, elderly cats and those with mobility issues will benefit from the 4-step design which has a smaller gap between each step, requiring less of a stretch.

  • Three step stair case: 9″ between steps
  • Four step stair case: 7″ between steps

Both are the exact same dimensions overall, it is just the extra step with smaller gap that makes up the difference between the two models. THe overall dimensions for both are 25″ in height, with the base being 25″ x 17″.

The soft fleece/carpet covering is quite lush, so don’t be surprised if your cat chooses to turn this into another cozy sleep spot.

Outdoor Cat Stairs

If you want to place some stairs outdoors, exposed to the weather, perhaps in a location that makes it easier for your cat to get up to a patio or even inside a cat enclosure, then you’ll need to look at steps that are built to withstand the weather.

The indoor type stairs just won’t cut it outdoors, obviously. Many people choose to make their own outdoor cat furniture and the like, but not everyone has the handyperson skills, or the time and know-how required to do that.

There are a few pre-built options available for an outdoor set of steps for your cat, and whether they are suitable for you will depend largely on how high you need the steps to go. As many pet steps are also made for dogs, a lot don’t reach a high level as dogs are not as naturally inclined to want to climb as our cats are!
